7-Step Business Guide: Launching Successful First Nations Apprenticeship or Traineeship Programs

Starting an apprenticeship or traineeship program isn’t just about filling roles—it’s about strategically developing talent, boosting workforce skills, and creating a loyal, high-performing team. Our recent article highlights the top five reasons why Apprenticeships and Traineeships are a smart investment for building a resilient and capable workforce.

But we know getting started can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve laid out seven essential steps to help you confidently launch or refine your apprenticeship and traineeship program.

Step 1: Understand the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Model

An apprenticeship or traineeship involves training a new or current team member in your trade by combining paid, on-the-job experience with formal education provided by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). This approach not only helps grow your business but also contributes to building a skilled workforce within your industry.

Choosing between an apprenticeship and a traineeship can be a big decision. While they might seem alike, they each have different focuses. Understanding these differences can help you pick the right path for your business. Read more about the differences here

Step 2: Partner with ITEC Employment for Support

For a seamless and successful apprenticeship or traineeship experience, trust ITEC Employment’s Apprenticeship Consultants and First Nations Mentors. We’ll help you find the right First Nations candidate and provide ongoing support from start to finish, ensuring your program runs smoothly and effectively.

Our Services Include:

  • Finding the Right Candidate: We assist in identifying and can even recruit the best fit for your business.
  • Mentoring and Behaviour Support: We offer guidance to manage any challenging behaviours that might arise in the workplace.
  • Cultural Awareness Training: We provide training to ensure your workplace is inclusive, safe, and supportive.
  • Regular Progress Check-ins: We maintain regular contact with you, the apprentice, and the RTO to monitor progress.
  • Getting Back on Track: If the apprentice falls behind, we engage the RTO to develop strategies to help them catch up.
  • Financial Incentives: We assist you in applying for and claiming financial incentives to help with wage costs, where eligible.
  • Training Schedule Assistance: We help you understand the apprentice’s or trainee’s training schedule and requirements.
  • Pre-Employment Preparation: We support the apprentice or trainee in securing their uniform, transport, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE) before they start work.

Step 3: Complete the Training Contract

We’ll facilitate the completion of the training contract between you, your apprentice or trainee, and the RTO to ensure all parties are aligned and ready to begin.

Step 4: Apply for Financial Support

We help you navigate the wage subsidy and incentive eligibility process. Our team will guide you through the steps of making claims via myGov and the Australian Data Management System (ADMS).

Step 5: Commence the Apprenticeship

Once everything is in place, your apprentice or trainee can begin their journey with your business.

Step 6: Regular Mentoring and Progress Check-ins

Throughout the apprenticeship or Traineeship, you’ll participate in regular check-ins with your Apprenticeship Consultant and/or Mentor to discuss progress and address any challenges.

Step 7: Complete and Get Qualified

Congratulations! Once your First Nations apprentice or trainee completes their training, they will hold a nationally recognised qualification, adding value to both your business and the industry.
