New Role, Same Passion: Together Helping People Build Lifelong Careers

Delivering our services to Thursday Island

As the new Lead Apprenticeship Consultant at ITEC Employment, I’m excited to share how we’re making a real difference in people’s lives. ITEC Employment, a First Nations specialist in employment, is focused on doing more than just placing people in jobs—we’re here to equip individuals with the tools they need to build lifelong careers.

In today’s fast-changing world, that’s more important than ever. With so much support from my network in the employment services industry, my transition into this role has been smooth, and I’m eager to continue growing our presence.

One of the things that sets us apart is our deep connection to the communities we serve. I’ve been lucky to visit our remote locations, including a memorable three-day tour in Bamaga with our mentor, David Ahboo.

We met with council groups, local businesses, and schools, and the experience was a powerful reminder of how much opportunity exists when we work together. From my furthest north visit to Thursday Island to the challenges faced in Bamaga, one thing is clear—every community is different, and they need unique solutions. Limited access to the internet and computers shouldn’t stop anyone from achieving their career goals, and we’re committed to overcoming those barriers.

At ITEC Employment, we understand that generations have changed. Today’s young people face different challenges than their parents did, but one thing remains the same: everyone deserves a fair chance to succeed. As a mum of three teenagers and a proud member of an Indigenous inclusive family, I know how much influence parents and mentors can have on shaping future careers. That’s why I’m passionate about bridging the gap between young people and the opportunities available to them.

What really drives me is knowing that we’re not just helping people find jobs; we’re giving them qualifications that last a lifetime. I often tell people, “A job can change in a heartbeat, but a qualification is forever.” That’s where we make a real impact—by setting individuals up for success in industries that offer stability. Whether you’re an employer looking to give someone a start, or a young First Nations person ready to chase your career dreams, we’re here to help.

Our services go beyond the basics. We’re bringing together businesses, mentors, Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), and a dedicated team to ensure that each person we support has everything they need to succeed. This can include digital literacy & reading courses, mental health programs or employment readiness workshops. It’s a team effort, and we’re committed to making sure each individual has a personalised plan and is supported with what they need. The businesses I’ve met so far are incredible, and I’d love to hear from more city and metro businesses that share our passion for supporting the next generation.

Here’s what makes us unique: we don’t just fill roles—we empower people to build careers that will support their families and communities for generations to come. If you’re an employer looking to invest in the future, or if you’re a young person ready to start your journey, I’d love to hear from you. I’ll also be a guest on Thursday Island Radio soon, sharing more about how we’re helping people change their lives through apprenticeships and traineeships.

“When someone we’ve supported gets their qualification or graduates, it’s like being part of their family. We know how much effort it takes from everyone involved—from the individual to their employer, family, RTO, and our team—to get them to that moment. Everyone should be involved in the celebration.”

Together, we’re empowering potential — not just in jobs, but in careers that will last a lifetime.  I’d love to hear from you—whether you’re a business with Apprenticeship or traineeship opportunities, a First Nations individual looking to achieve your career goals, or a parent wanting to explore opportunities for your child. I am here to help you!
